Javier Rodriguez is the chief executive officer of DaVita Inc. (NYSE: DVA), which provides health care services to kidney disease patients throughout the United States and internationally. DaVita strives to improve patients’ quality of life through clinical innovation and integrated, personalized care. DaVita’s global operations include 65,000 teammates serving 225,000 patients treating in-center, in their homes and in hospitals.
Mr. Rodriguez has spent more than 20 years driving DaVita’s transformation for how kidney care is delivered. He is passionate about creating an integrated, high-quality experience for all patients with kidney disease, while lowering costs for the health care system.
Mr. Rodriguez earned a master’s degree from Harvard Business School and completed an executive program at Stanford Graduate School of Business. He earned a bachelor’s degree in finance and marketing from Boston College. Mr. Rodriguez was named one of the 2015 Top 10 Leaders by Hispanic Executive magazine. He also serves on the board of directors for the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce.
Michael D. Staffieri became our chief operating officer, DaVita Kidney Care, in March 2014. From July 2011 to February 2014, he served as a senior vice president, Kidney Care. From March 2008 to July 2011, he served as our vice president of operations and new center development. Mr. Staffieri joined the Company in July 2000 and has served in several different roles. Prior to joining us, Mr. Staffieri worked for Arthur Andersen LLP in Finance from 1999 to 2000.
Robert Lang became our President and Chief Executive Officer of International in April 2017. Prior to joining DaVita, Mr. Lang was managing director, Bupa International Markets. From 2013-2016, as managing director, Bupa Global, Mr. Lang oversaw the company’s international private medical insurance operations globally. Before that, Robert held senior roles at HSBC Group, including CEO of HSBC Hong Kong and head of insurance at HSBC UK, as well as head of strategy and transformation at UBS Wealth Management Europe. Mr. Lang has also held senior roles with ING Insurance, including chief distribution officer for ING Europe. He served in the Australian Army from 1991-1998.
Joel Ackerman became our chief financial officer on February 27, 2017 after serving as our senior vice president, finance from February 21, 2017 to February 26, 2017. Prior to joining us, Mr. Ackerman was the chief executive officer and a member of the board of directors of Champions Oncology, Inc., a company engaged in the development of advanced technology solutions and services to personalize the development and use of oncology drugs, since October 2010. Mr. Ackerman is currently the Chairman of Champions Oncology. Mr. Ackerman served as a managing director at Warburg Pincus, a global private equity firm, where he led the healthcare services team for 10 years from January 1999 to September 2008. He sits on the board of directors at Kindred Healthcare, Inc., a position he has held since December 2008, and previously served on the board of directors of Coventry Health Care, Inc. a national managed care company, from September 1999 until its acquisition by Aetna Inc. in May 2013. He is also chairman of the board of One Acre Fund, a not-for-profit organization that focuses on smallholder agriculture, and serves more than 700,000 subsistence farmers in Africa.
John Winstel became our Chief Accounting Officer in March 2020. Mr. Winstel brings more than 25 years of accounting and finance experience to DaVita. Most recently, he served as Vice President and Corporate Controller for Cooper Tire & Rubber Company. Prior to that, Mr. Winstel held senior roles with Proctor & Gamble, General Cable and various companies within the food industry. Mr. Winstel began his career with Deloitte & Touche LLP, where he led audit engagements for multinational, public companies. Mr. Winstel earned a bachelor's degree in accounting and finance from the University of Cincinnati and an MBA from Duke University.
Jeffrey Giullian, MD, serves as chief medical officer of DaVita Kidney Care. Dr. Giullian leads the transformation of kidney care through his commitment to providing holistic, integrated care that addresses the clinical and psychosocial needs of patients. Dr. Giullian is focused on pushing the boundaries on exemplary clinical care through innovation and expanding what is possible for patients living with kidney disease.
Since joining DaVita in 2016, Dr. Giullian previously served as chief medical officer of hospital services, vice president of medical affairs and national group medical director at DaVita Kidney Care. Dr. Giullian relies on his past experiences in private practice and hospital leadership to advocate for patients, physicians and medical directors. He is active with the Renal Physicians Association (RPA) as a member of the Board of Directors, chairman of the Healthcare Payment Committee and member of the RPA’s team of advisors to the American Medical Association Relative Value Units Utilization Committee. Dr. Giullian trained in nephrology and transplantation at Vanderbilt University and received his MBA from the University of Colorado at Denver.
Kathleen A. Waters became our chief legal officer in May 2016. Prior to joining the Company, Ms. Waters was senior vice president, general counsel and secretary of Health Net, Inc., a publicly traded managed care organization from April 2015 to March 2016. She was a partner in Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP's litigation practice from 2003 to 2015. She also was the leader of that firm's Los Angeles litigation group and co-leader of the health care group. Before that, Ms. Waters was a partner at Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison LLP in Los Angeles.
As the Chief People Officer, Kenny oversees the entire human resources function, taking care of ~65,000 teammates across the world. He has been with DaVita for nearly a decade and most recently served the company as a group vice president (GVP), overseeing field operations in the Southeast as well as DaVita’s diagnostic laboratory.
Prior to joining DaVita, Mr. Gardner previously worked as an investment banker at Morgan Stanley focused on Mergers and Acquisitions.
Mr. Gardner holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the Florida A&M University along with an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business where he was recognized as an Arbuckle Leadership Fellow.
Kenny is committed to the broader South Florida community and is actively engaged with the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project, Food for the Poor, Perez Art Museum, Frost Museum of Science and Golden Cane Society.
